Purpose

The Eviction Protection Grant Program offers funding to legal service corporations and other legal service providers who will provide legal assistance at no cost to low-income tenants at risk of or subject to eviction. The program seeks to support individuals and families in locations with high rates of eviction, including rural areas, and help avoid eviction or minimize the disruption and harm caused by eviction for residents who are disproportionately represented among those evicted, which include people of color, people with limited English proficiency, and people with disabilities.

Eligible legal services include:

  • Legal representation for legal filings and court proceedings, such as negotiation, mediation, or arbitration, as well as limited representation, counsel, and advice
  • Navigation and assistance responding to actions by the evicting party related to the court process or to avoid a court process, such as assistance filing forms
  • Collaboration with courts, judges, and other parties to create and promote eviction diversion programs
  • Assistance with filing fair housing complaints related to eviction
  • Assistance to tenants navigating the transition process, including vacating the rental property, paperwork for school transfers or enabling students to remain at their current school, arrangements for continuation of healthcare, and access to resources to obtain stable housing
  • Assistance to tenants to avoid or reduce the negative impacts of a potential eviction, such as referrals to service providers, such as case workers to obtain rental assistance, housing or financial counseling, Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP), healthcare services, and related stabilizing measures
  • Education and outreach to tenants at risk of or subject to eviction regarding their rights related to eviction, available resources, and the eviction process
